Dentures: Fast Facts
One of the most difficult forms of dental damage to deal with is tooth loss. Not only do you have to adjust to a smile with open spaces that may cause you embarrassment and a tendency to back out of social engagements – but you may also find yourself struggling with daily tasks you once enjoyed without a second thought. Rather than continuing to hide your teeth, while wrestling with chewing uncomfortably and trying to speak clearly, we encourage you to find out whether dentures may offer you the improved daily quality of life you deserve. Read ahead:
Denture Fast Facts
- Dentures are not for any particular age group – they offer an appropriate solution to patients of all ages. Though you may assume they are large and overwhelming, modern dentures of today are actually lightweight, comfortable, and natural looking.
- Dentures are not only for complete tooth loss, though they certainly provide a wonderful tooth replacement solution to edentulous patients (or those missing all of their teeth). We also offer partial dentures, which address partial tooth loss.
- Dentures provide a versatile option within the world of prosthetics because they are quick to create, so you can achieve an improvement without the need for a long wait. Also, because they rely on the natural suction created within your mouth, they are well suited to patients dealing with a variety of dental problems, from jaw deterioration to natural teeth too weak to support other devices like dental bridges.
- A complete denture includes a full series of artificial teeth supported in a pink acrylic base – you will wear the denture over your top or bottom dental ridge to complete your smile.
- A partial denture is built similarly with replacement teeth supported in pink acrylic to signify your gum tissue. However, this device also includes metal clasps that gain support when placed over your remaining natural teeth.
- Dentures will provide you with the ability to regain daily comfort, a beautifully complete smile, effective chewing habits, and the ability to speak clearly.

Getting Filled In On the Benefits of Fillings
You probably know that if we find a cavity in your tooth, we are going to suggest you return to see us as soon as possible for a filling. But have you ever asked yourself why you need this restorative treatment? Do you avoid scheduling your visit partly because you can think of a long list of more exciting things to do with your time and partly because ignoring your cavity does not seem like a decision that may end in disaster? When it comes to the benefits of dental fillings, we feel quite strongly about ensuring our patients are educated and knowledgeable. The sooner you visit us to fill your tooth, the greater your chances of protecting your long-term oral health, while avoiding some serious (and completely preventable) complications. Learn more:
Benefit #1: Decay Removal
Understanding the benefits of fillings means you need to understand why you need the treatment. First, your cavity formed as a result of plaque. When this sticky, bacteria-filled substance adheres to your teeth, it eats away at your tooth tissue. Eventually, so much tissue is gone that it gives way to a small hole. The first part of a dental filling removes the decayed tissue and cleans the opening to prepare it for repair.
Benefit #2: Treating A Cavity Prevents Problems
The cavity in your tooth is not going to stop growing – it will also not heal itself. Tooth decay is progressive, which means it keeps getting worse. This may result in a very large, deep cavity that greatly compromises your tooth, potentially leading to breakage. Your cavity may also provide entrance for bacteria, which, when they come into contact with the dental pulp deep within your tooth, will result in infection. To avoid the need for complex care like root canal therapy or the need for a dental crown, say, “yes” to a filling.
Benefit #3: Fillings Repair Tooth Structure
The next part of your filling includes the physical repair of your damaged structure. In addition to removing the decayed tissue, we will fill the opening with a sturdy material – either composite or amalgam. Replacing the tissue restores the structural integrity of your tooth, so you can use it to its full function again, while chewing and speaking in comfort.

What to Expect from Dental Bridges
Nobody enjoys dealing with tooth loss. However, patients are usually relieved and excited to learn about the wonderful options available to them for replacing teeth. If you are missing one tooth or up to three teeth side-by-side (rather than spread out from one another), a bridge may assist you in achieving the complete smile you desire and need for comfortable, effective daily function. We recognize that patients often have preconceived notions about dental bridges and most prosthetics, which is why we would like for you to become more familiar with every solution. Thanks to advances in dental technology, today’s tooth replacement options offer modern, beautiful finishes for patients of all ages. Ready to learn more? Read ahead:
About the Process
You will initially visit us for a consultation, when we will examine your mouth to ensure you make a good candidate for a dental bridge. We will speak with you about your needs and smile goals, while explaining what to expect. Before creating your bridge, our team will take impressions of your mouth, so you receive a custom-fitted bridge with replacement teeth color-matched to your surrounding teeth. You can expect an undetectable transition from your natural teeth to your bridge for a truly beautiful result.
Placing Your Bridge
When your bridge is complete, you will visit us for placement. Understanding how the bridge works is significant when learning about how it is placed. Become familiar with the following details:
- A dental bridge includes a series of connected artificial teeth
- On each end of the dental bridge is a dental crown – we will cement the crown over the “anchor teeth” – or the natural tooth that rests on each side of your smile opening
- Resting between the crowns are replacement teeth called “pontics” which will fill the opening in your smile for a uniform finish
- We will cement the bridge in place for long-term wear

Protecting Your Teeth With Crowns
Have you visited us only to find out you need a dental crown to improve the health of your tooth? If so, you may feel excited to be moving forward toward a more comfortable smile but slightly confused about why we have selected this restorative solution. Fortunately, crowns often provide patients with a way to save the health of their natural teeth without resorting to an extraction. Beyond the basic understanding, however, we are well aware that patients often have a lengthy list of additional questions. Because we feel passionate about ensuring every one of our patients feels confident and educated about dental care, we have gathered some information to improve your insight:
Crowns and Damage
A dental crown is a prosthetic tooth that fully covers the visible portion of your natural tooth. You need a crown because your tooth is damaged. There is not one particular type of damage that necessitates a crown. Instead, we offer this restoration on a case-by-case basis to cover, protect, and repair your tooth, often for one of the following reasons:
- Your tooth is broken or fractured
- Your tooth suffers from serious decay and a filling will not suffice
- You have just undergone root canal treatment
- You suffer from severe cosmetic damage
Crown Types
We offer dental crowns composed of different materials according to the location of your tooth within your mouth. Your visible teeth that show when you smile do not bear as heavy a load as your back chewing teeth. Your back teeth require greater support but are typically difficult for onlookers to see when you speak or smile. For front teeth, porcelain crowns offer a natural, lifelike finish while offering excellent coverage. For more substantial support, we may suggest porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) or gold for back teeth.

Restorative Dentistry: A Quiz
Rest assured, even individuals who take immaculate care of their teeth occasionally require repair from time to time. We understand that every one of our patients experiences an individual journey in life, which is why we encourage you to schedule a visit even if you are embarrassed by your current state of oral health. We don’t see failure or problems when you visit us – we see the potential for a beautiful, healthy smile and enjoy pinpointing the treatments that will best suit your needs. If your teeth and gums could use some TLC, we invite you to learn more about the many benefits of restorative dentistry. Wondering how we can help? Test your knowledge with the following quiz:
A Restorative Dentistry Quiz: True or False
- True or False: The main goal of restorative dentistry is to repair damage and restore your oral health, so you return to your original state of comfort and wellbeing.
- True or False: Dental crowns are used to replace missing teeth.
- True or False: If you suffer from a cavity, we will likely suggest a dental filling to remove the decay and restore your tooth’s structural integrity.
- True or False: Your options for replacing missing teeth primarily include bridges.
Quiz Answer Key
- True. Unlike preventive dentistry, which focuses on helping you avoid the development of problems, restorative care addresses issues that have developed. The goal is to repair the structure of your teeth and gums, while ensuring you return to optimal oral health.
- False. We offer dental crowns to cover and protect remaining teeth that can no longer stand on their own or that require substantial support. This may include a badly damaged tooth, a tooth with a large cavity, or a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment.
- True. Dental fillings will stop your tooth decay from progressing. This is important because the larger your cavity becomes, the greater risk you run of a shattered tooth or an infection that will require more complex, costly restorative care in the future.
- False. In addition to dental bridges that replace one tooth or up to three teeth in a row, we also offer dental prosthetics for all configurations of missing teeth, including dentures and dental implants.
