Did you know that we often repair and restore smiles in Mansfield, TX, in just one sitting? In today’s blog, we would like to highlight one procedure in particular that can often address an array of esthetic issues in just one visit: dental bonding. When should you see us for bonding, and how do we restore your tooth?
What To Do With A Chipped Tooth
If you end up with a chipped tooth, try to recover any pieces and bring them with you to the office. If you can’t, don’t worry, we can still repair the tooth. Rise your mouth with warm water and then use a cold compress or ice pack to ease swelling by placing it against the side of the face. You can use cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding. See our team right away, as even minor damage could enable bacteria to gain access to the sensitive and porous in layers of dentin, allowing cavities and infection to take place. When you arrive, we will assess the damage and choose the most appropriate treatment option.
The Dental Bonding Process
If the damage is minor, we may employ dental bonding to repair the issue in one sitting. After we remove any decay and clean the tooth, we will etch the surface and prepare the material. We use composite resin, the same material employed in our tooth-colored fillings. The material can be shaded to match your tooth structure and is metal-free. We create it from a special blend of plastic and glass. We apply the material in several layers and then shape the tooth as we cure the composite resin under a light. The final step will involve polishing the tooth for a more lifelike appearance. In addition, we could also buff and sand away portions of outer structure, known as contouring, to address minor issues with the surface and shape of the tooth.
Other Benefits
Bonding not only repairs minor chips and cracks, but can also help lengthen teeth that have become worn down due to teeth grinding or clenching. Our team can close unsightly gaps between the teeth and even mask permanent discoloration. Known as intrinsic stains, these form beneath the outer enamel and may be nearly impossible to remove with most teeth whitening treatments. Bonding and contouring can also address pits, grooves or rough patches, or overly-pointed portions of tooth structure.
