According to the American Academy of Periodontology, nearly half of adults over 30 have encountered gum disease. Gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, can advance to periodontitis if left untreated which can lead to eventual tooth loss. Gum disease is a chronic condition that is marked by inflamed, painful gums. Gingivitis and other forms of gum disease predominantly occur in adults in their 30’s and 40’s but can also occur in teens. In today’s blog your Mansfield dentists Dr. Jones and Dr. Harris explain the stages and symptoms of gum disease.
Stages of Gum Disease
- Gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease, causes tender, swollen, and red gums that easily bleed when brushed. Strong home care made up of regular brushing and flossing paired with professional dental cleanings can prevent gingivitis. If Dr. Jones and Dr. Harris find signs of gum disease, their hygienists will perform a deep cleaning method called scaling and root planing. Root planing and scaling removes plaque and tartar from periodontal pockets, space created between your gums and teeth. Root planing and scaling also smooths the root surface where bacteria accumulate. Gingivitis is the only stage of gum disease that is reversible. More advanced gum disease may be treated but is not reversible.
- Periodontitis is a more serious form of gum disease. It occurs when gingivitis is not treated. Plaque expands and develops below the gum line. The bacteria in plaque produce toxins which irritate the gums and trigger a chronic inflammatory response in the body. This leads to the deterioration of the bone and tissue that support teeth. Gums recede and pull away from teeth, forming periodontal pockets that become infected. As the pockets enlarge, more and more gum tissue deteriorates and teeth can become loose and require extraction.
