Have you heard of dental sealants? If you have heard of them, do you believe them to be only for children? Dental sealants are a plastic material used to protect your teeth against harmful bacteria, plaque, and tartar. While sealants are a common tool used to protect the teeth of children, they can and are used to protect the teeth of adults, as well. Some adults have a higher risk of developing cavities; sealants can help to reduce this risk. Especially as we enter autumn and winter, seasons filled with sugary treats, it is important to think about every way you can protect the smiles of yourself and your families.
How Do Sealants Work?
Dental sealants consist of a thin, biocompatible plastic being painted directly onto the surface of the teeth. This plastic dries into a protective coating that hugs tightly around each curve and corner of each tooth. Prior to applying the sealant, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried. The sealant protects against harmful bacteria attacking the enamel of the teeth. Sealant protection can last for several years, but touch-ups may be required. Regular visits to your dentist at least twice a year allow for your dentist or hygienist to evaluate the status of the sealants. Good oral hygiene consisting of brushing and flossing twice daily is still important even with the protection of sealants.
High Risk For Cavities
Children are usually at greater risk for cavities because of their likeliness to have ineffective brushing and flossing skills, and their penchant for sweets. Adults can be at a greater risk of cavities for reasons, such as genetics, older age, dry mouth, bruxism, certain medications, orthodontic treatments, and more. A dry mouth is a breeding ground for the kind of bacteria that causes tooth decay. Bruxism, the grinding of teeth, can cause tiny cracks in the teeth that bacteria can thrive in.
