Typically, advanced tooth loss is addressed with removable dentures. While effective, they often need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years, and the risk of slippage is always present. But what if we could provide a more secure option, one that is fixed in place? With implant dentistry, we can secure full and partial dentures for our Mansfield, TX, patients!
What Happens When We Lose Natural Teeth?
When we lose most, if not all, of our natural teeth, we may develop problems eating a variety of food, and could be forced to rely mainly on soft foods. Over time, this could deprive our bodies of essential vitamin and nutrients. For others, tooth loss could be linked to difficulty speaking clearly. Finally, the body will take note of the missing teeth and respond by suspending the flow of calcium and phosphorus to the jawbone. Without these key nutrients, the bone tissue deteriorates and the person could develop a prematurely aged appearance.
Full Dentures
As the name implies, a full denture addresses every tooth on one or both arches. The prosthetic will contain natural looking teeth created using lifelike materials, such as ceramic that can be shaded to look like actual tooth enamel. There will be a base created from acrylic to mimic the appearance of gum tissue as well.
Partial Dentures
A partial addresses advanced tooth loss for people that don’t yet need a full denture. The prosthetic can replace missing teeth, even if they’re spread out across the arch. Again, the prosthetic will contain lifelike teeth and a base that looks like gum tissue. We will design and create the partial based on detailed impressions and measurements we take of your smile.
Implant Options
Instead of relying on metal clasps or suction, if the patient has strong enough jawbone tissue and is free of periodontitis, we may insert six to eight dental implants per arch. Once the placement area heals, we can attach a custom-made denture to the dental implants. The prosthetic will be fixed in place and won’t need to be removed for cleaning or maintenance. The dental implants act as new tooth roots, so the body resumes the flow of nutrients and the facial structure is preserved.
