Dr. Jones and Dr. Harris treat patients of all ages in their welcoming Mansfield office. In today’s blog they discuss three dental health issues that middle aged adults and seniors are likely to encounter and what to do about them.
Gum Disease, Tooth Decay, and Crowding
- Gum Disease. Mild gum disease is marked by red, inflamed, uncomfortable gums that bleed easily when brushed. This is called gingivitis. If untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis (gum disease) in which gums pull back from teeth and form periodontal pockets in between the gums and teeth. As gum disease advances, these pockets can become infected and bone tissue can be destroyed. Teeth may loosen and even fall out. The best way to prevent or treat gum disease is obtaining professional cleanings. Dr. Jones and Dr. Mansfield and their skilled hygienists perform a deep cleaning called root planing and scaling that stops gingivitis from progressing into periodontitis.
- Cavities. Though most people associate cavities with children, older adults can also develop cavities. Cavities can crop up at the root of the tooth, on the surface of teeth, or around old fillings. Make sure to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss once daily. Maintaining dental cleanings every six months will also fight tooth decay.
- Tooth Crowding. As we age, our teeth naturally shift. They may become crooked and misaligned. It may change our bite and causes some teeth to become more eroded than others. This places increased stress on supporting tissue and bone. Crooked teeth also trap more food which can in turn lead to cavities. Speak to Dr. Jones and Dr. Harris if you feel your teeth are becoming crooked, and they may be able to fit you for a retainer or recommend braces. Alternatively, individuals with crooked teeth may benefit from more frequent dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar.
