You’ve decided to dramatically brighten your smile with the help of a one visit teeth whitening session with your dentist. You’re happy with the results and just can’t stop grinning at yourself in the mirror. But without proper care, your enamel will begin to accumulate miniscule stains that counteract the effects of even the most powerful teeth whitening treatment. Today, we’re discussing a few techniques for extending the brilliance of your smile.
Clean Teeth are Beautiful Teeth
Does it feel like your head might explode if you hear your dentist or hygienist or well-intentioned blog writer tell you to brush your teeth again? Well, it’s solid advice with plenty of scientific research backing it up. The best way to keep your teeth looking and feeling healthy is to practice regular dental hygiene at home, including brushing at least two times a day and flossing once every evening. Extending the life of your whitening treatment begins with regular brushing, which removes particles of food and drinks as well as plaque that can lead to stain accumulation.
Be Smart about Dark Colored Foods and Drinks
You know those foods and drinks that left your teeth looking yellow and prompted you to seek out in-office teeth whitening in the first place? They can still leave stains on your teeth after whitening. In fact, those stains may appear more intense once you’ve become accustomed to a dazzlingly bright smile. Some common staining foods and drinks include:
- Coffee and tea.
- Dark or acidic fruit juices, including grape, cranberry, and orange.
- Red and white wine.
- Berries and cherries.
- Dark and deeply colored condiments like soy sauce, curry, and balsamic vinegar.
- Acidic foods like tomato sauce and sour candies.
It’s just not realistic to suggest avoiding these foods and drinks altogether. Many of them have health and nutrition benefits that, in the grand scheme of things, far outweigh their ability to stain your teeth. Instead, when you choose to consume foods that stain, be sure to brush after eating. If brushing isn’t possible, swish your mouth with water to remove the bulk of the staining agents from your teeth.
Touch Up As Needed
When you go in for your one visit teeth whitening appointment, talk to your dentist about being fitted for take-home trays. Every few months, you can fill the trays with whitening gel and wear them for a day or two to remove any stains that may have accumulated. With touch-ups performed as needed (usually 1-2 times per year), your in-office whitening results can last for years.
