mansfield dental sedation

We know that whether due to lack of experience or a bad previous one, many people feel nervous about the dentist. We understand, and instead of trying to minimize your discomfort, we will offer calming solutions. In today’s blog, your Mansfield, TX, dentist talks about ensuring a comfortable visit with dental sedation.

When Patients Need a Calming Treatment

When should a person receive dental sedation? We may recommend this for people with dental anxiety, which can make undergoing care difficult. The same does for people with special needs that could otherwise complicate the ability to undergo dental care. A calming agent can help people undergoing more extensive treatments, such as dental implant placement and tooth extraction, to ensure comfort during the proceedings.

Choosing the Right One for You

We have two different options for ensuring patients enter a deep state of calm and relaxation. How do we choose the right one for you? Our team will look at a number of different factors, such as your age, weight, and your medical history. We take any medications you are taking into account as well, along with your anxiety levels. From there, we can decide which option is best for you.

Nitrous Oxide and Oral Sedation

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a very mild and common option, one that is safe for kids and adults alike. We will administer this through a mask over the nose, so you breathe in the gas and enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, often with little memory of the process despite staying conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed. The effects can be adjusted during treatment and wear off once the treatment ends, so you can drive yourself home or even return to work or school.

Our team also offers oral sedation. With this option, we may recommend avoiding food and drink the hours before the procedure begins, and the treatment will usually take place in the morning. You will take the sedation in the form of a pill or liquid prior to the procedure and enter a very state of calm, with little to no memory of the procedure. You again remain conscious, but this is a more substantial calming effect. In fact, the effects take time to wear off, so be sure you have someone on hand to bring you home afterward.
