It is probably safe to say that we all want our smiles to look as beautiful as they can. However, that is not always the case. Maybe our lifestyles, genetics, or possibly a past accident have caused them to look less bright. Whereas years ago we would have to live with it, today through cosmetic dentistry, your Mansfield, TX, dentists can help you achieve the smile you want. Specifically, porcelain veneers can help your teeth look brand new.
I Am Interested. What Are They?
Porcelain veneers are thin, translucent shells that are custom designed and bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They are also made to match the color of your natural teeth. Dr. Jones or Dr. Harris will remove a tiny amount of enamel so that they can fit on the teeth.
Why Would I Want Them?
There are several reasons that patients may elect to get veneers. These include repairing a chipped or broken tooth, having discolored teeth, shaping or aligning teeth, or closing a gap between the teeth.
Sounds Good. How Do I Get Them?
The first step is to make an appointment with us. We will discuss your goals and reasons for wanting them and determine a treatment plan that will help you achieve those goals. After choosing to get veneers, we will start by preparing your teeth by reshaping them. During this part, we may use a local anesthetic during the treatment since we will be removing the enamel. We will then make a model of your teeth, and you will be fitted with temporary veneers. After a lab has created your custom-designed ones, we will bond them into place on your teeth. We will want to schedule follow-up exams so that we can check their alignment and for any other dental issues relating to them.
How Long Do They Last?
Porcelain veneers can last up to 15 years if they are treated well. We suggest that you avoid certain foods in your diet as much as possible that could stain them, such as red wine, tea, and coffee. You will also want to eat hard foods with your back teeth and not chew on things, like ice or pens, or open items with your front teeth. And if you grind your teeth at night, we recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect them. Finally, to help them continue to look bright, brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride-based toothpaste and to floss once a day before going to bed.
