Your hygiene and oral hygiene routines are ones that you probably learned at a very young age. They may have changed over time, but they have probably stayed pretty consistent throughout the years. Depending on your age, you probably have had a good handle on bathing and brushing your teeth for a long time. While your oral hygiene routine may be impeccable, it could also use just a bit of improvement. We have three important reminders that may help you give your oral hygiene a little boost. If you live in Mansfield, Texas, be sure to visit us for more ways to keep your smile healthy.
#1: It Matters When You Do It
It does not take long for plaque (a sticky film filled with bacteria) to harden into tartar (calcified plaque that cannot be removed at home). The longer that bacteria stays on and around your teeth the longer it has to cause tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing and flossing after every meal can be challenging especially when your life is busy. However, brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day is doable and highly recommended. When time permits, brushing and flossing after breakfast is better than just waking up as it gives you a chance to remove the remains of the meal. Most importantly, a routine before going to sleep is essential. Any leftovers of food, drink, cough syrup, etc. in your mouth as you sleep will be a feast for harmful bacteria.
#2: Technique Is Important
It is important to clean every surface of every tooth during each brushing and flossing session. Doing so can limit your exposure to the harmful bacteria that can damage your smile. Don’t forget spots in the back of the mouth and the surfaces of your teeth that face the tongue.
#3: Cleanings Should Be Routine
Tartar buildup cannot be removed at home, but can be removed during a professional cleaning. During a cleaning, your dentist or hygienist can also identify any weak spots in your hygiene technique and give you pointers on how to improve. Everyone should have a dental cleaning at least twice a year.
