Where do you start when choosing between soft, hard, and medium-labeled bristles? While we want a toothbrush that is hard enough to remove built-up bacteria from our teeth, we do not want a brush that can be too hard on our gums. A soft-labeled toothbrush is the recommended way to go unless your dentist specifically suggests another type for you. Many of types of organic toothbrushes are popular but have not been extensively studied, and until then, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends nylon bristles. The ADA Seal of Approval can be a helpful guide when shopping. 

Size

The toothbrush head and handles can come in a variety of sizes. If you have a large or average-sized adult mouth, you may like a full-sized toothbrush head. If you have a smaller mouth, you may be more comfortable with a smaller sized toothbrush head. Many adults even choose to brush with a child’s toothbrush because they feel like they can better maneuver in their mouth. Non-slip handles are a good choice for better maneuverability.  

Electric or Manual

Electric toothbrushes can range in price from $5 to $200. Those that operate by battery power tend to be lower in price, but they should be replaced as frequently as a manual toothbrush. More expensive electric toothbrushes can give you the option of changing just the brush heads rather than replacing the whole thing. Since it is important to brush your teeth for at least two minutes, a timer on an electric toothbrush could help you reach that goal.
