Gum disease is prevalent in many patients. In fact, it affects approximately 80 percent of American adults. Many of those who have it leave it untreated. And why? Because it often goes unnoticed. Unlike when you smile and can see your teeth and any blemishes on them, infections in the gum tissue are not visible to the naked eye. However, when you visit your Mansfield, TX, dentists, we can carefully examine your teeth above and below the gum line for any signs of gum disease. If detected early, Dr. Jones or Dr. Harris may recommend a scaling and root planing treatment.

What Is Scaling And Root Planing?

The earliest stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. It is easily treatable if it is detected early. But if left untreated, it could compromise your oral health, possibly resulting in tooth loss or further gum or bone issues. The scaling process is the first step in the treatment. It is a common dental practice, and it can be completed in an office. After thoroughly examining your teeth and gums, you will be given a local anesthetic to help minimize any pain that you may experience. For scaling, your teeth are cleaned from top to bottom, above and below the gum line. Excess plaque and tartar are removed. Once that is complete, the dentist then performs root planing, which is where the roots are smoothed out so that bacteria have trouble clinging to them. During the healing process, the gum tissue will reattach to the roots.

What Are Signs And Symptoms Of Gum Disease?

As mentioned, gum disease can often go untreated because it is unnoticed by patients who have it. However, there are some signs and symptoms you should be aware of that may mean you are experiencing it. These include swollen, red, or tender gums; bleeding after your brush; teeth that have moved or loose; your bite has changed alignment; and consistent bad breath. If any of these things are happening to you, please schedule a visit with us as soon as possible.
