Right now, you’re probably spending more time at home, social distancing in a bid to help slow the spread of COVID-19. We’re doing the same, only opening our office for emergency treatments for our Mansfield, TX, patients. Now more than ever, you need to take steps to protect the health of your smile, and your family’s, from home!

Avoiding Cavities and Other Concerns

Without routine care and smile healthy snack choices, we can leave bits of sugar and starch behind on and between the teeth. As bacteria break down these bits of food, they create plaque, coating the teeth in a sticky layer. Over time, this elevates oral acidity and weakens outer enamel, allowing cavities to form. The buildup also irritates and inflames gum tissues as well, leading to a greater risk of gingivitis and gum disease. However, with the right steps you can help lower your risk of trouble, and protect your smile until we can see you again!

Brushing and Flossing Correctly

How should you and your family care for your smiles each day? First, start each day by brushing your teeth for about two minutes, this applies to kids as well as adults! Use a toothbrush with soft bristles, and a toothpaste with fluoride, as fluoride helps strengthen the outer layers of tooth enamel. We recommend going to the same before going to bed, and also flossing before bed as well. When we floss, we reach and remove the bits of food that a toothbrush’s bristles cannot reach.

Enjoying a Smile Healthy Diet

We also suggest taking steps to deprive harmful oral bacteria of a meal, which means cutting back on foods and drinks high in sugar or starch. Avoiding candies and chips, instead opt for fruits, veggies, sugar-free gum, nuts, cheeses, or low-fat yogurts. Instead of soda, energy drinks, or sports drinks, be sure to enjoy a glass of water, as this cleanses your mouth as well as hydrates. Remember, if you do begin to experience pain in one or more of your teeth, then you should contact our team. You may need an emergency visit to treat any decay or infection, preventing worsening discomfort or even the loss of a tooth. When you visit our office, know that we will take steps to clean and disinfect surfaces in between each patient visit, and schedule a visit to ensure you’re not in a waiting room filled with people. If you have any questions, then please contact our team today.
