Dental emergencies are frightening and stressful events. We all want to retain our natural teeth and maintain our attractive smiles. But simply knowing what to do in the seconds following a dental emergency will boost your chances of saving a tooth. Your Mansfield dentists Dr. Jones and Dr. Harris discuss some tips for both preventing dental emergencies as well as for reacting to them.

Take Actions to Prevent Dental Emergencies

Your Mansfield dentists know that sometimes emergencies happen despite all of our precautions. But follow Dr. Jones and Dr. Harris’s tips in order to prevent many common dental emergencies:

  • Do not bite down on hard candy, ice, or popcorn. These often crack teeth.
  • Wear athletic mouth guards when playing sports.
  • Do not place objects in your mouth to cut them or to hold them. Protect your teeth by using scissors for cutting or place an object down until your hands are free to hold them.

Knocked Out Teeth

If you knock out a permanent tooth, try to place the tooth back into the socket without handling the root. If this is not possible, always keep the tooth moist by storing it in milk and visit our office as soon as possible.

Toothaches

Rinse your mouth with warm water to disinfect it. Delicately floss around your teeth to remove trapped food particles or debris. Never place aspirin on the uncomfortable tooth or on the gums. Call our office to schedule an appointment.

Tongue or Lip Laceration

Clean out the injury with warm water and place a cold compress on it. Apply pressure to stop any bleeding and visit our office.

Cracked Teeth

Rinse out your mouth with warm water right away and apply a cold pack on your face to reduce swelling.
