TMD, or a temporomandibular joint disorder, refers to a condition that occurs in the jaw joints (temporomandibular joints, or TMJs). These joints are used numerous times throughout the day in chewing, speaking, drinking, and even breathing. However, even though they are very active, the TMJs are rather delicate, responding poorly to stress. But just how much do you know about the stresses that can contribute to TMD? This continual stress, over time, can become too much for the TMJs, causing TMD to develop. For disorders caused by bruxism, an oral device worn at night can discourage bruxism and relieve strain on the TMJs, offering relief.
  2. False. TMD has many debilitating symptoms. However, a backache is not one of them. Symptoms of TMD include earaches, migraines, facial pain, jaw pain, a locked jaw, and frequent headaches.
  3. True. Bruxism is not the only potential cause of TMD. In some cases, the strain on the TMJs may be the result of malocclusion (a misaligned bite). Because the teeth of the upper and lower jaws are not properly aligned, the TMJs will be strained every time the teeth are forced to come together.
