2015 is finally here and, if you’re like 45% of people in the United States, you made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight, get organized, pick up a new hobby, or find love. However, the Journal of Clinical Psychology reports that only about 8% of people who make New Year’s resolutions actually end up achieving them.

Taking better care of your teeth is a great step to take n the New Year, and your chances of success are higher because living a smile-healthy lifestyle is simple, cheap, and easy to do. Follow our three step guide to enjoying better oral health this year.

Step 1: Get the Right Tools

A toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouth wash. Chances are you’ve already got at least two of these items on your bathroom counter and, if you have them, you’re well-equipped to start taking better care of your smile. If not, you can pick up all four for under $10 at any grocery store or megamart. You don’t need to buy the fanciest or most expensive brands either. When buying dental care products, remember to make sure:

  • The toothbrush has soft bristles (anything stiffer can damage gums and enamel).
  • The toothpaste is ADA-approved.
  • The dental floss is waxed and will move easily between teeth.

Step 2: Make it a Habit

Experts say it only takes about 21 days to establish a new habit. Pick two times that are pretty consistent everyday: while you’re waiting for your face lotion to absorb before putting on makeup in the morning, the last five minutes of your lunch break, during the commercial break on your favorite evening TV show, whatever. Now, every day, put that toothbrush and other supplies to use during these times every day.

Step 3: Don’t Forget the Little Things

Let’s be logical: if you brush and floss every day, but then spend your day sipping on a soda pop, sucking on hard candies, or smoking, you’re not going to experience the full benefits of taking better care of your teeth. Look at your lifestyle habits, especially the ones that may be affecting your oral health, and consider where further changes can be made.
